yellowmarmot Posted July 27, 2011 Share Posted July 27, 2011 Various websites, although nothing official I can find on Gibson's, are claiming that Gibson is going to be issuing a Jeff Tweedy Signature SG for this year's 50th anniversary of the 1961 SG, in blue with a maestro vibrola, for under $2000. Does anyone have any idea whether this might possibly be true, and, if so, how one might go about attempting to buy one of these? I certainly realize the utter folly of believing that celebrity-endorsed instruments have special powers, but a blue 1961-specs SG with a maestro tailpiece for non-custom-shop prices sounds like a deal too good to be true, no matter the name is on it. Something about a white double pick guard, too? I don't know anything about the price, though, or when it will be available or how you'd buy it. So ... maybe this isn't that helpful. Is there any way to find out whether lovely specimen is going to become an actual production guitar, and, if so, which dealers might get one? Bizarrely, amazon.com lists a Tweedy SG as "in stock" for $1699 but then says it "usually ships in 4 to 7 months," which makes me think that they don't actually have one in stock, and also I'd be awfully nervous ordering a (perhaps nonexistent) guitar sight unseen from amazon as opposed to a reputable guitar shop. Interestingly, it looks from Gibson's site that they're currently selling another "50th anniversary" signature SG (Robbie Krieger) with a lyre tailpiece, in the conventional SG red, for less than the cost of the ordinary 1961 reissue. But if there's any possibility of getting one in blue with a white pickguard for a mass-production price, then I'm going to save my pennies for that. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

jff Posted July 28, 2011 Share Posted July 28, 2011 I've never really felt comfortable with an SG, but I'm a big fan of SGs in the hands of others (Townshend, Iommi, Tweedy, Angus Young, Zappa, Derek Trucks, etc.). Tweedy's blue one is one of the coolest looking SGs I've seen and would look damn fine and very tempting hanging in any music shop. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Thanks for the post." If they are showing up in stores in a few weeks, why does there seem to be no mention of them on the Gibson website or really anywhere else? If I want to play an acoustic, I want a fat neck... If I want to play an electric, I want a small neck.. If I were to buy a signature guitar, I'd want a Nels Cline Signature Jazzmaster. Much as I adore Cline's playing, personally I'm never going to play like him nor get realistically the most out of the things that make a jazzmaster unique (playing behind the bridge, figuring out how to use those rhythm circuit switches). In that video Auerbach is playing a 1959 Supro Coronado - finding an original would be quite difficult, I think, but Eastwood Guitars makes a very affordable modern copy, they call it their Airline '59 Coronado. Moss Posted August 3, 2011 Share Posted August 3, 2011 I remember going to the rock and roll hall of fame and they have an SG hanging there that was used on a bunch of George Harrison songs and then a bunch of Badfinger songs (baby blue, no matter what, etc...), then I saw Tweedy play Spiders (Kidsmoke) at red rocks with a blue one. A '61 reissue, for starters is technically going to be a Les Paul, and as stated by YellowMarmot, will have a very skinny neck. Fantastic news about the guitar, BTW!
